Papers of Abraham Polonsky, a screenwriter and filmmaker who was blacklisted in Hollywood after his refusal to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Among Polonsky's papers are manuscripts of his novels and stories; scripts for radio, theater, televsion, and motion pictures, including documentation for his highly-acclaimed film, Tell Them Willie Boy Is Here (Universal, 1969); and diaries of his personal life, 1951-1967.

American screenwriter and film director

Abraham Lincoln Polonsky (December 5, 1910 – October 26, 1999) was an American film director, screenwriter, essayist and novelist. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Body and Soul (1947). The following year, he wrote and directed Force of Evil (1948), which was later hailed by Martin Scorsese and others as one of the finest achievements of American film noir.^[1][2] However, it was to be Polonsky's last credited film for over twenty years. In April 1951, he refused to cooperate or "name names" to the House Un-American Activities Committee and was blacklisted by the movie studios.

Abraham Polonsky was born in New York City, the eldest son of RussianJewish immigrants,^[3] Henry and Rebecca (née Rosoff). Abraham Polonski (1903 – ), also known as Pol or Maurice Ferrer, was a Belarusian electrical engineer in Toulouse who was one of the founders of the French Jewish Resistance movement.

By June 1940, the French army had surrendered to Germany. Polonski and others established an underground organization called La Main Forte, meaning "The Strong Hand".^[1]

By 1942, Polonski and Labor MovementZionist activists also established the Armee Juive (AJ), or Jewish Army, which was a commando force composed of the Zionist youth movement members.^[2] During 1943–1944, the Jewish Army helped some hundreds of its members to successfully escape to Spain and then Palestine.
