Seo Taiji (born Jeong Hyeon-Cheol on February 21, 1972) is a South Korean singer and musician.

At the age of 14, Taiji participated in several amateur rock bands. In 1989, at age 17, he was recruited into metal group Sinawe (shee-nah-wee), popularly hailed as the first Korean heavy metal band. Taiji chose to drop out of school, a system that he felt did nothing but corrupt the minds of youth, and became a professional musician.

After the break up of Sinawe in 1991, Taiji switched gears and formed the dance group Seo Taiji and Boys (Seo Taiji and Boys) with dancers Lee Ju-no and Yang Hyun-suk.

The introduction of the first Seo Taiji and Boys album announced a complete shift in the focus of popular Korean music that is still felt today. Their first single, “Nan Arayo” (난 알아요, “I Know”) was a hugely successful hit, being one of the first songs in K-Pop to meld contemporary dance sounds with urban-influenced rap lyrics.

Seo Taiji and Boys (Korean: 서태지와 아이들) was a South Korean music group active from 1992 to 1996. The three members of the boy band, Seo Taiji, Yang Hyun-suk and Lee Juno, experimented with many different genres of popular Western music.[1] Seo Taiji and Boys was highly successful and is credited with changing the South Korean music industry by pioneering the use of rap in Korean popular music and utilizing social critique, despite pressure from ethics and censorship committees.[2][3]

The band won the Grand Prize at the Seoul Music Awards in both 1992 and 1993.[4] In April 1996, Billboard reported that the band's first three albums had each sold over 1.6 million copies, with the fourth nearing two million,[5] making all four some of the best-selling albums in South Korea.

Jeong Hyeon Cheol (정현철), popularly known as Seo Taiji, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, musician, and producer. He rose to become an influential music icon and one of the most successful artists of the country, even earning the nickname "Culture president".

Seo Taiji's passion for music began at a very young age. He joined different amateur rock bands until he was recruited to join the heavy metal band Sinawe. Seo Taiji eventually decided to drop out of high school to pursue music full time, and from this, he slowly worked on his musicality and career growth.

In 1992, Seo Taiji formed the group Seo Taiji and the boys, along with Yang Hyun Suk and Lee Juno—together, they found immediate success. They released different music and presented styles that resonated with the younger generation, eventually becoming the catalyst of Korean pop's development. In 1996, after Seo Taiji and The Boys' disbandment, Seo Taiji retired and flew to America.

In 2000, Seo Taiji returned to South Korea and pursued a solo career in music.
