Gabriel LalemantSJ (French pronunciation:[ɡabʁijɛllalmɑ̃]; 3 October 1610 – 17 March 1649) was a French Jesuit missionary in New France beginning in 1646. Caught up in warfare between the Huron and nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, he was killed in St. Ignace by Mohawk warriors and is one of the eight Canadian Martyrs.

Life

Gabriel Lalemant was born in Paris, 3 October 1610, the son of a French lawyer and his wife.[1] He was the third of six children, five of whom entered religious life. Two of Gabriel's uncles served the Jesuits in New France: Charles Lalemant as the first Superior of the Jesuit missions in

Saint Gabriel Lalemant (1610-1649) was born and raised a Parisian. He had an uncle who was a missionary among the native populations of New France (Canada), and whose stories about the ministry greatly influenced Gabriel’s youth. After studies at a Jesuit College, Gabriel entered the Society of Jesus with a great desire to serve in the missions. But he was thought to be of poor health, and was assigned for seven years to teaching and guiding students in his native land. In 1646 he was finally sent to the Huron missions, where another of his uncles was the superior.

After two years of language and cultural studies in Quebec, Gabriel moved to the village of Sainte Marie. From there he began making weekly visits to the Huron missions as a companion of fellow Jesuit missionary Jean de Brébeuf. Gabriel Lalemant S.J. (oder Gabriel Lallemant) (* 3. Oktober1610 in Paris; † 17. März1649 an der Georgsbucht) war ein französischer Priester und Jesuit in Neufrankreich. Er wurde in einen Krieg zwischen den Huronen und der Irokesen-Konföderation verwickelt und wurde von Mohawk-Kriegern getötet. Er wird als einer der Kanadischen Märtyrer verehrt.

Leben

Gabriel Lalemant war der Neffe von Jérôme Lalemant, zeitweise Leiter der Jesuitenmission in Neufrankreich und Provinzial des Ordens in Québec, sowie Charles Lalemants, der erste Superior der Jesuitenmissionen unter den Huronen in Neufrankreich.[1]

Bildung

Gabriels Eltern waren ein französischer Anwalt und seine Frau.[2] Er war das dritte von sechs Kindern, von denen insgesamt fünf in eine Ordensgemeinschaft eintraten. Zwei von Gabriels Onkeln waren damals bereits als Jesuitenmissionare in Neufrankreich.

1630 trat Gabriel den Jesuiten bei und 1632 legte das Gelübde ab, sich auf Auslandsmissionen zu begeben.
