Erykah Badu occupied a sweet spot between jazz, traditional soul and hip-hop. Born Erica Wright, she grew up in Dallas as a show business child, studying voice and dance at the Dallas Theater Center well before adolescence. She then moved on to Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. After dropping out of college she began recording demos, one of which got to Kedar Massenburg, the then-president of Motown Records. He became her manager and landed her a duet with another of his clients, D'Angelo, and ultimately signed her to his own Kedar label. Her first album, 1997's "Baduizm," was an immediate hit and a cornerstone of the neo-soul genre. Though the production was modern, her voice drew comparisons to Billie Holiday and Nina Simone. The soulful singer-songwriter, 53, took home the trophy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for the track “3 A.M.” with rapper Rapsody. This is Badu's first Grammy win since 2000 when she scored Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for The Roots song “You Got Me.”

Erica Abi Wright (born February 26, 1971),[2] known professionally as Erykah Badu (), is an American singer and songwriter. Influenced by R&B, soul, and hip hop,[2] Badu rose to prominence in the late 1990s when her debut album Baduizm (1997), placed her at the forefront of the neo soul movement, earning her the nickname "Queen of Neo Soul" by music critics.

Badu's career began after she opened a show for D'Angelo in 1994 in Fort Worth, leading to record label executive Kedar Massenburg signing her to Kedar Entertainment.[2] Her first album, Baduizm, was released in February 1997.[3] It spawned four singles: "On & On", "Appletree", "Next Lifetime" and "Otherside of the Game". The album was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[4] Her first live album, Live, was released in November 1997, contained her signature song "Tyrone" and was certified double platinum by the RIAA.[4]
