Al-Nawawi is the Imam, the unique hafiz and exemplar, the Sheikh of Islam, the emblem of the saints, Muhyi al-Din Abu Zakariyyah Yahya ibn Sharaf ibn Murri al-Huzami al-Harani al-Shafi’i. He is the author of many beneficial works.
His Life
Imam al-Nawawi was born in the month of Muharram in the year 631 AH (October 1233 CE) and moved to Damascus in the year 649 AH (1251-1252 CE). There, he stayed in the madrasah ‘al-Rawahiyah’ living off of bread. He memorized al-Tanbih in four and a half months and spent the rest of the year studying and memorizing a quarter of al-Muhadhdhab with his sheikh, al-Kamal ibn Ahmad. After that, he performed hajj with his father and stayed in Madinah a month and a half. However, he was sick the majority of the trip.

Imam An Nawawi (631–676 H)
He is Yahya Ibn Sharaf Ibn Hasan Ibn Husain An Nawawi Ad Dimasyqi, Abu Zakaria. He was born on the month of Muharram, year 631 Hijri, in Nawa, a village near the region of Damascus, the current capital of Syria. He was taught by his father who was famous for his piety and righteousness. He started to study sciences at katatib ( a place for kids to learn to read and write) and completed his memorization of the Qur’an before he reached the teen age.
When he was ten years old, Sheikh Yasin Ibn Yusuf Az-Zarkasyi saw him being forced to play by his friends, but he evaded them, refused, and cried because of that forcing. The sheikh said that this child is hoped to be the brightest and the most ascetic man of his time, and the one to give great benefits to muslims. Hearing that, his father and teachers paid more attention to him.

Short Biography of Imaam an-Nawawi
Imaam an-Nawawi (rahimahu Allahu ta’aalaa – died 676 Hijree) was without doubt one of the greatest scholars this Ummah has been blessed with. His works have had a tremendous benefit and influence for the Muslims throughout history, and from amongst his works is his collection of 42 ahaadeeth of the Prophet ﷺ which together form a comprehensive explanation of this Great Deen of Islaam. This work is commonly referred to as “an-Nawawi’s Forty Hadeeth” and without doubt it contains immense benefit and guidance.
The complete name of Imaam an-Nawawi is Abu Zakaria Mohiuddin Yahya, son of Sharaf An-Nawawi. Nawawi refers to Nawaa, a place near Damascus, in the suburb of the city of Howran. Imaam an-Nawawi was born at Nawa in the year 631 A.H.(about 1255 CE) His father, a virtuous and pious man, resolved to arrange for proper and befitting education as he had discovered the symptoms of heavenly intelligence and wisdom in his promising child at an early stage.
