JOHN GEDDES was born in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from the College of Charlesotn and studied law. He was a Cavalry Major and then Major General in the South Carolina Militia. Prior to becoming governor, he was a Justice of the Peace, a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 1808 to 1816 (including Speaker for two years), a member of the South Carolina Senate from 1816 to 1818, and Commissioner of Free Schools. Both slavery and tariffs were becoming volatile issues during Geddes’ gubernatorial term. In 1820, Congress declared African slave trade an act of piracy and provided for the death penalty for American citizens participating in the importation of slaves. After leaving office, Geddes served as Intendant (mayor) of Charleston from 1824 to 1825.

John M. Geddes is an American journalist who served as one of two managing editors of The New York Times. He was appointed to that post in 2003, and left it in 2013. Geddes served as managing editor for news operations. He and Jill Abramson were selected to replace former managing editor Gerald M. Boyd, who resigned after copyright infringements by Jayson Blair were found.[1]

Background

Geddes attended college at the University of Rhode Island, graduating in 1974 with a degree in economics, and obtained a master's degree in business journalism in 1976 from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.[2] He currently serves as an Executive Advisory Board member for the Harrington School of Communication and Media at the University of Rhode Island.[citation needed]

Biography

John Geddes was managing editor for Bloomberg Politics directing the news service’s 2016 election coverage. He was a Shorenstein fellow in 2014 at the Harvard Kennedy School.

He retired as managing editor of The New York Times in 2013. He served in that role for nearly a decade, after having served as deputy managing editor and as a business/financial editor.

Before joining The Times in 1994, Mr. Geddes was the chief executive officer of BIS Strategic Decisions, a market research company acquired by Friday Holdings, an investment partnership in which he was a principal.

From 1976 to 1993, Mr. Geddes worked in the newspaper industry. Beginning as a reporter at The Ansonia Evening Sentinel, Ansonia, Connecticut. He worked as a reporter for the AP/Dow Jones News Service in New York and later in Bonn.
