James R. McDonough is is the former director of the Florida Office of Drug Control and the secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections from 2006 to 2008.

A Brooklyn native, he graduated from both MIT and West Point and served as an Army officer in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of colonel before retiring and taking a series of national positions in drug law enforcement and security. He worked under the national drug czar before becoming the drug czar of Florida in 1999.

A graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the United States Military Academy, McDonough concluded his extensive Army career with assignments in Africa (Rwanda, Zaire, and Uganda) and the Balkans (Bosnia). During his military career, he was awarded three James R. I bought, read, and got this outstanding book autographed by the author, my West Point classmate, many years ago. While you can read other reviews that describe various intriguing aspects of the book, this review is more about the author. Granted, he tells you in his first chapters that he went to West Point and was a boxing champion, but not much beyond that, and you only come to learn about him through his Vietnam experience. Here, I’d like to give you a little more about him, “following” his career, so that you can better appreciate the brilliant mind that crafted this book, a military classic that is required reading at West Point and ROTC.

Jim graduated with honors (number 26 out of 800 graduates; around the top 3%) at the United States Military Academy Class of 1969. After graduation, he attended the Airborne, Ranger, and Jungle Warfare schools before his deployment to South Vietnam with the storied 173d Airborne Infantry Brigade, the first major USA ground unit deployed in Vietnam, with Jim arriving at his newly assigned platoon’

James R. McDonough is an American former military officer and civil servant. He was the Secretary of the Florida Department of Corrections from February 10, 2006, to January 15, 2008. Florida Governor Jeb Bush appointed McDonough after Secretary Jimmy V. Crosby resigned amidst a corruption scandal.[1]

Early life and education

McDonough attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in addition to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, where he graduated in 1969. He met his wife, Pat, there and they married four days after their graduation.[2]

Career

McDonough had an extensive military career, including assignments in Africa and the Balkans. He was awarded three Bronze Stars (one for valor), the Purple Heart, and the Distinguished Service Medal, among other honors.[3]

Before serving as Secretary of the Department of Corrections, McDonough served as the Director of the Governor's Office of Drug Control under Governor Jeb Bush, as well as Florida's only drugs czar for seven years.[
