Texas Jack Omohundro

American frontier scout and showman (1846–1880)

John Baker Omohundro (July 27, 1846 – June 28, 1880), also known as "Texas Jack", was an American frontier scout, actor, and cowboy. Born in rural Virginia, he served the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. He later served as a civilian scout for the US Army during the American Indian Wars. Before his untimely death, Texas Jack became a legendary figure in the American Old West as a Western showman performing dramas on the stage throughout the country, and was immortalized in dime novels published around the world.

Early life

Omohundro was born in Palmyra on the Pleasure Hill farm in Fluvanna County, Virginia, on July 27, 1846, to John Burwell and Catherine Baker Omohundro, of Anglo-American ancestry. He attended grammar school in Fluvanna and at an early age showed a strong skill in hunting and fishing.[1]

When John Baker “Texas Jack” Omohundro was born on 26 July 1846, in Palmyra, Fluvanna, Virginia, United States, his father, John Burwell Omohundro, was 29 and his mother, Catherine Salome Baker, was 24. He married Giuseppina Antonia Josephine Morlacchi on 31 August 1873, in Rochester, Monroe, New York, United States. He lived in Fluvanna, Virginia, United States in 1860. He registered for military service in 1864. In 1874, his occupation is listed as hunter....guide.....for visiting vips & foreign dignitaries. in Big Horn, Montana, United States. He died on 28 June 1880, in Leadville, Lake, Colorado, United States, at the age of 33, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Leadville, Lake, Colorado, United States.
