Walter Jerry Payton (July 25, 1953[notes 1] – November 1, 1999) was an American professional footballrunning back who played in the National Football League (NFL) for 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears. Nicknamed "Sweetness", he is widely regarded as one of the greatest football players of all time.

 On November 1st, 1999, legendary Bears running back Walter Payton passed away after a short illness.  To many, he was the epitome of greatness.  To some he represented the blue collar, hardworking city of Chicago in the 70’s and 80’s.  To many, he was one of the greatest players in Chicago Bears as well as NFL history.  The anniversary of this death has just passed us. It’s time to remember a legend.

Walter Jerry Payton was born in Columbia, Mississippi on July 25th, 1954.  He grew up as a very active youth participating in several activities including participating in his local church and Boy Scouts.  He was in his high school marching band, joined track and sang in the choir.

Walter Payton is regarded as one of the best players in NFL history. He played for the Chicago Bears for 13 years and earned nine Pro Bowl selections. Payton was nicknamed “Sweetness” for his kind, compassionate demeanor both on and off the field.

Early Years

Payton was born on July 25, 1954, in Columbia, Mississippi. He attended Jackson State University and played as a halfback. Payton made the starting lineup during his freshman year in 1971, and was named Black College Player of the Year in 1973 and 1974. During that time, Payton also studied education at Jackson State with an emphasis on working with the deaf.

NFL Career

In 1975, Payton joined the National Football League playing for the Chicago Bears. In 1977, he won the League’s Most Valuable Player Award, and achieved a single-game rushing record of 275 yards against the Minnesota Vikings – a game in which he suffered from the flu.
