Vicente Rocafuerte

Vicente Rocafuerte y Bejarano (May 1, 1783 – May 16, 1847) was an influential figure in Ecuadorian politics and President of Ecuador from September 10, 1834 to January 31, 1839.

He was born into an aristocratic family in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and as a youth, was sent to Madrid to finish his education. He returned to Ecuador in 1807, and committed himself to freeing his land, first from Spanish rule, and later from the Republic of Gran Colombia.

Vicente Rocafuerte (Guayaquil 1783-Lima 1847), an enlightened member of the Ecuadorian creole elite, made a substantial contribution to the ideological cause of Latin American independence. He started his long and fruitful political career as a member of the first modern Spanish Parliament, the Cortes of Cádiz (1810-1814). He then became mayor of Guayaquil and would become the second President of Ecuador. During his life he met the most influential political leaders of the time both in Europe and the Americas. Moreover, he carried out a long and sustained effort to popularize the ideas of the US republican fathers, the French philosophes but, above all, the views and proposals of Thomas Paine, whose works he also translated into Spanish. Vicente Rocafuerte (b. 1 May 1783; d. 16 May 1847), Ecuadorian independence leader, diplomat, and statesman. Born in Guayaquil to one of the region's wealthiest families, Rocafuerte studied at the Colegio de Nobles Americanos in Granada, Spain, and at the Collège de Saint Germain-en-Laye in France. Returning to Guayaquil in 1807, he devoted himself to family affairs; three years later he was elected alcalde ordinario (city magistrate) of Guayaquil. In 1812 he traveled to England, then to the Continent as far as Russia. Elected to the Cortes, he arrived in Madrid in April 1814 in time to witness the abolition of that parliament. Thereafter, he devoted his efforts and his fortune to the interests of the new American nations, serving Colombia, Cuba, and Mexico during 1820–1824.
