Kirsten Gillibrand assumed office as a United States senator from New York in January 2009, after being appointed to fill the seat vacated by Senator Hillary Clinton when she became U.S. secretary of state for the Obama Administration. Gillibrand won a special election in 2010, and full terms since. In March 2019, she announced her candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States, but withdrew from the race in August 2019.

Gillibrand was born December 9, 1966, near Albany, NY. She graduated from Dartmouth College with a degree in Asian studies in 1988 and completed her Juris Doctorate from the University of California-Los Angeles Law School in 1991.

Gillibrand clerked at the U.S. Court of Appeals before joining a law firm in New York City. She served as special counsel to Andrew Cuomo when he was secretary of housing and urban development during the Clinton administration. Kirsten Elizabeth Rutnik Gillibrand (born December 9, 1966) is an American politician and the juniorUnited States Senator from New York since 2009. She is a member of the Democratic Party and former member of the United States House of Representatives from New York's 20th congressional district.

In January 2019, Gillibrand announced her plans to run for President of the United States in the 2020 election.[1] She made a formal announcement on March 17, 2019.[2] She ended her campaign on August 28, 2019.
