Yangthang Rinpoche or Kyabje Domang Yangthang Rinpoche (Tib. མདོ་མང་གཡང་ཐང་རིན་པོ་ཆེ།, Wyl. mdo mang g.yang thang rin po che) or Kunzang Jigmed Dechen Ösal Dorje (Tibetan calendar: 16th Rabjyung, Sa abrul, 10th of 11th month-17th Rabjyung, Me sprel, 14th of 8th month) (1930–2016) was a renowned Nyingma teacher from the region of Yangthang who was associated with Domang Monastery, a branch of Palyul in Eastern Tibet.^[1]

Yangthang Rinpoche was a lineage holder of the Nyingthig Yabshi, which combines all the major Dzogchen schools. However, he was most well known for deliberately staying in Tibet after its takeover by China in order to teach in the prisons. He lived for 22 years in Chinese prisons, teaching both the Tibetan prisoners and the Chinese guards. He was released following the death of Mao Zedong.^[2]

Dzogchen master Yangthang Tulku Rinpoche has died

His Eminence Venerable Yangthang Tulku, a highly revered lama in the Nyingma lineage of Tantrayana Buddhism, has died.

Ari Bhöd announced the passing of Yangthang Tulku, one of their most senior Nyingma lineage masters, on Monday.

“Yangthang Tulku was known as a compassionate, humble, no-nonsense Dzogchen master of the Nyingma, Old School Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism,” who was “widely recognized for the quality and depth of his realization, the power of his attainment, and the purity of his transmissions,” they wrote.

Yangthang Tulku is recognized as the reincarnation of Dorje Dechen Lingpa. He was trained in the Kangyur and Tangyur, the works of Longchenpa, and was trained extensively to master the practices of his lineage.

Yangthang Tulku was captured by Chinese communists following the invasion of Tibet in 1959, and was imprisoned for twenty-two years. He was released following the death of Mao Tse Tung, and returned to Dhomang, and eventually back to his birthplace in Sikkim. He spent his final

At the very moment that Dorje Dechen Lingpa’s incarnation was born in Sikkim, the sky thundered the details of his location. He was discovered exactly as described, born into the Yangthang family, which is why Rinpoche was known as Yangthang Tulku. A second emanation was born in Sikkim and was brought up together with his older counterpart. When Yangthang Rinpoche was invited back to his monastery in Tibet, the younger emanation also insisted upon joining him. The two young boys departed with their party, playing and performing many miracles along the journey.

Upon returning to Dhomang Monastery both tulkus were put in the hands of Sogtrul Rinpoche and many other lamas at Dhomang. They were given the finest and best education, with Khenpo Pema from the Palyul Mother Monastery as their personal instructor. Thus, both tulkus were able to fully complete all their studies.
