Biography

Alfred Cralle invented the mechanical ice cream scoop in 1897.[1]

Alfred Cralle is Notable.

Alfred L. Cralle (/ˈælfɹəd ˈkɹɔli/) was born in Kenbridge, Lunenburg County, Virginia on 4 September 1866,[2] to parents Alfred Cralle and Martha Street. The 1870 U.S. Census recorded 3-year-old Apheus Cralle in his parents' household in Kenbridge, Lunenburg County, Virginia,[3] and the 1880 U.S. Census recorded 13-year-old Alfred Crallie in his parents' household in Browns Store Ma

Because of Alfred L. Cralle, nobody has to use a regular spoon to struggle to make scoops of ice cream. On this day in 1897, Cralle invented the ice cream scooper (U.S. Patent #576395), although he never profited from it.

He was a businessman who worked for his father in the carpentry trade. He later moved to Washington, D.C., where he attended Wayland Seminary, a branch of the National Theological Institute. He moved to Pittsburgh and worked at a hotel drugstore. He noticed that ice cream servers were having a hard time inserting chunks of ice cream into a cone.

Cralle’s invention was originally called the Ice Cream Mold and Disher and was designed to keep ice cream and other foods from sticking.

According to blackpast.org, Cralle was also a successful business promoter. When local investors created the Afro-American Financial, Accumulating, Merchandise and Business Association in Pittsburgh, he was selected as assistant manager.

Biography

Alfred L. Cralle, who was African American, was born in Kenbridge, Lunenburg County, Virginia, in 1866, just after the end of the American Civil War.[1][2] He attended local schools and worked with his father in the carpentry trade as a young man, becoming interested in mechanics. He was sent to Washington, D.C., where he attended Wayland Seminary,[1] one of a number of schools founded by the American Baptist Home Mission Society to help educate African Americans after the Civil War.

He then settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he first served as a porter in a drug store and at a hotel.[1] Alfred noticed that servers at the hotel had trouble with ice cream sticking to serving spoons, and he developed an ice cream scoop.[3]
