Ernesto Cortazar II was born in Mexico City into a family of composers. Ernesto's father, Ernesto Cortazar Sr., was an accomplished composer respected in his field and was named president of the Society of Authors and Composers.
When Ernesto Cortazar II was 13 he tragically lost both of his parents in a horrible auto accident. Despite tragedy Ernesto preceded with his intense studies by attending a music academy, and by age 17, he began scoring for movies.
At age 18, Ernesto completed his very first musical score for the motion picture "La Risa de la Ciudad". The main musical composition for this film was Ernesto's piano piece titled "River of Dreams." With this film, Ernesto Cortazar won the award for Best Background Music for a Latin American Film at The Cartagena Festival. Ernesto Cortazar Lara was born in Mexico City where he began his fascination with the guitar as a young child. By the age of ten he was playing and learning to master his instrument. He is mainly a self taught guitarist, although when he was fourteen he began three years of study at the Conservatory Nacional De Musica of Mexico City. As an adult he lived for a while in New York City and studied with some of the greatest players that call that city home: , Wayne Krantz, Christopher Rosenberg and Rodney Jones, to name a few. He also study in Europe with Kurt Rosenwinkel and Nelson Veras. Ernesto is a world-class guitarist, a professional musician for more than twenty years who has played with many of greats in the art: Carlos Santana, Kermit Driscol and others. In 1990s, he toured the Americas with Ricky Martin and performed before huge crowds in televised concerts. Ernesto Cortázar (May 2, 1940 – August 2, 2004) was a Mexican composer, arranger, and pianist, born in Mexico City and who died in Tampico, Tamaulipas.[1] He was the son of composer, Ernesto Cortázar, founder and president of the Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico [es].[2]

At the age of 13, Ernesto Cortázar lost his parents in a car accident. He finished his musical studies, and at age 17, began his work as a film musician. In 1958, he won the Best Background Music Award for a Latin American film at the International Festival of Cartagena (Colombia), with the melody Rio de Sueños.

He scored more than 500 films and managed to become the #1 artist of mp3.com during the years 1999 and 2001, achieving more than 14 million downloads at that time.[3]
