Between at least 1880 and 1885, Arthur Benton was listed in two censuses as a working farmer. This work didn't agree with him, as he sought out another occupation by c. 1887.

Architect, Union Pacific Railroad, Chief Engineer's Office, Omaha, NE, 1890-1891. In the Union Pacific Chief Railroad Engineer's Office, he worked for Virgil Gay Bogue (1846-1916). Bogue worked for several railroads and would gain some acclaim for a Beaux-Arts city plan that he designed for Seattle in 1911.

Draftsman, Caukin and Haas, Architects, Los Angeles, CA, 1892. The noted Berkeley architect John Galen Howard (1864-1931) also worked in the short-lived Caukin and Haas Office.

Arthur Burnett Benton (April 17, 1858 – September 18, 1927)[1] was an American architect. Benton promoted Mission Revival architecture.[2][3]

Early life

Arthur Burnett Benton was born in Peoria, Illinois.[4] He studied at the School of Art and Design, at Topeka, Kansas.

In 1893, he married Harriet Phillipina von Schilling. They had one daughter.[1]

Career

Benton worked for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. He moved to California in 1901, settling in Los Angeles.[4]

In 1900, he received the commission for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Riverside, CA, which was built in that style. This building caught the eye of Frank Augustus Miller, who ran a nearby adobe tourist hotel, known as the Glenwood Inn. Miller had a vision of a great M

Benton has been an important and influential factor in forwarding all movements projected for progress and improvement at Kansas City, Kansas, where he has resided since 1899.

Arthur S. Benton was born in DeWitt county, Illinois, on the 4th of March, 1864, and he is a son of William and Ellen J. (King) Benton, both of whom are now deceased. The parents were natives of Ohio and the father was summoned to eternal rest in 1864, at the age of forty, the mother having passed away in 1888, at the age of sixty-six. Of the three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Benton, Arthur S. was the youngest and he is the only one surviving at the present time, in 1911. William Benton devoted the major portion of his active business career to milling enterprises in DeWitt county, Illinois.
