Mawlid (Arabic: مولد), also known as Eid-e-Milad an-Nabi (Arabic: عید ميلاد النبي, romanized:ʿīd mīlad an-nabī, lit.'feast of the birth of the prophet'), is an annual festival commemorating the birthday of the IslamicprophetMuhammad on the traditional date of 12 Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar. A day central to the traditions of Sunni Islam, the Mawlid is also celebrated by Shia Muslims.

The history of this celebration goes back to the early days of Islam when some of the Tabi‘un began to hold sessions in which poetry and songs composed to honour Muhammad were recited and sung to crowds in the major cities.[1] The celebration was continued either by the Abbasids and the Fatimids. Different views on the day and month of Prophet Muhammad’s birth

The biographers and historians differed concerning the day and month of the birth of the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). This is something for which there is good reason, as it was not known what status this newborn would achieve; his situation was like that of any other newborn. Hence no one can state with certainty the date of his birth (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). 

Dr. Muhammad at-Tayyib an-Najjar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 

“Perhaps the reason for this difference of opinion is that when he was born, no one expected that he would attend such a status. For that reason, he did not live in the spotlight from the beginning of his life. When Allah decreed that the Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) should begin to convey His message forty years after he was born, people began to seek out whatever memories they had about this Prophet, and they asked one another about

Prophet Muhammad’s birthday is considered an important and auspicious day amongst Muslims. Muslims commemorate this day, which is also known as Maulidur Rasul or Maulud Nabi, by sending their blessings to Prophet Muhammad with recitations of praises and blessings (marhaban). Talks are held in mosques in conjunction with the occasion, and Muslim organisations commemorate the life history of the prophet’s exemplary good character.1

Background
In Islam, Prophet Muhammad was the last prophet and final messenger of God. He was born on 12 Rabiulawal (29 August 570 CE), the third month of the Muslim calendar. The prophet died on his 63rd birthday.2

Celebrations
The prophet’s birthday celebrations were first observed in the 12th century, often followed by a month of festivities.3 In Singapore, the celebrations used to involve large-scale parades.4 Today, it is more subdued, although march-pasts were still held as recently as 1993 and 1998.5
