Aleksandar Vasiljević bio je zamenik načelnika Uprave za bezbednost Jugoslovenske narodne armije (JNA) od 1990. do 1991., načelnik te Uprave do 1992. i ponovo zamenik načelnika Službe bezbednosti u Vojsci Jugoslavije (VJ) koja je nasledila JNA, od 1999. do 2000. godine.


General Aleksandar Vasiljević opisuje kako je Slobodan Milošević imao kontrolu nad imenovanjima na ključne položaje, uključujući i u Ministarstvu unutrašnjih poslova Srbije: 

"Pitanje: ... Da li je optuženi ostvarivao bilo kakav uticaj na postavljenja ljudi u srpskom Ministarstvu unutrašnjih poslova? Očigledno, on je imao moć, ali da li je tu moć i ostvarivao?
Odgovor: Procedura postavljanja ministara u Vladi je jasna. Znači, predlaže ih mandatar za tu vladu, ali ja mislim da nema spora oko toga da za ključne pozicije u Vladi, a jedna od takvih pozicija svakako je uvek i bilo Ministarstvo unutrašnjih poslova, da je optuženi sigurno imao tu bitan uticaj na izbor i postavljenje tih ljudi. Aleksandar Vasiljević is a Serbian retired major general and the head of the Counterintelligence Service of Yugoslavia. Vasiljević was instrumental in the JBTZ-trial as he was the interrogation official responsible to talking with Janez Janša which was centered on Slovene dissidents and publishing of sensitive information in the youth magazine Mladina. Vasiljević retired in May 1992 and was arrested for his role in an interview with the weekly publication NIN. He was again deputy head between March 1999 and 2001. He testified in the Hague trial against Slobodan Milosevic.
