Short Biography
Mahzarin R. Banaji received her PhD From Ohio State University and did postdoctoral work at the University of Washington. From 1986-2001 she taught at Yale University where she was Reuben Post Halleck Professor of Psychology. Since then she has been Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University.
Banaji served as the first Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard from 2002-2008 and as the George A. and Helen Dunham Cowan Chair in Human Dynamics at the Santa Fe Institute, 2011-2015. She is currently Senior Advisor to the Provost at Harvard University.
Banaji was named Harvard College Professor for excellence in undergraduate teaching, previously won Yale’s Lex Hixon Prize for Teaching Excellence and was named Distinguished Member of the honor society, Psi Chi. Professor Banaji studies thinking and feeling as they unfold in social context, with a focus on mental systems that operate in implicit or unconscious mode. She studies social attitudes and beliefs in adults and children, especially those that have roots in group membership. She explores the implications of her work for questions of individual responsibility and social justice in democratic societies. Her current research interests focus on the origins of social cognition and applications of implicit cognition to improve individual decisions and organizational policies. Mahzarin Banaji taught at Yale from 1986-2002 where she was Ruben Post Halleck Professor of Psychology. Mahzarin Rustum Banaji was born and raised in India, in the town of Secunderabad, where she attended St. Ann's High School. Her B.A. is from Nizam College and her M.A. in Psychology from Osmania University in Hyderabad. She received her Ph.D. from Ohio State University (1986), and was an NIH postdoctoral fellow at University of Washington. From 1986-2001 she taught at Yale University where she was Reuben Post Halleck Professor of Psychology. In 2001 she moved to Harvard University as Richard Clarke Cabot Professor of Social Ethics in the Department of Psychology. She also served as the first Carol K. Pforzheimer Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study from 2002-2008.
