Conductor Paavo Järvi: 'Beethoven is no fake star'

The Estonian star conductor Paavo Järvi is, among other things, artistic director of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, one of the world's leading orchestras. The "dream team," as they call themselves, has already won several prizes for their collaborative recordings, including those of Ludwig van Beethoven's nine symphonies. Deutsche Welle has filmed Paavo Järvi and the orchestra on "The Beethoven Project." Here the conductor explains the secret of their success and why Beethoven's music especially his symphonies — are so relevant in 2020.

DW: Ten years ago, with "The Beethoven Project," you sought to present a version of his symphonies for the 21st century. What is always new to you about Beethoven?

Paavo Järvi: Beethoven considered his symphonies the summit of his output. For me, the thrill is a test of time. He is a versatile musician, highly valued as chamber musician, soloist, concertmaster and conductor, collaborating with distinguished musicians such as Paavo Järvi, Steven Isserlis, Lars Vogt, Viktoria Mullova, Elisabeth Leonskaja and his wife and brother in law, Tanja and Christian Tetzlaff.

Florian Donderer is frequent guest at major festivals such as Bergen Festspielen, Beethovenfest Bonn, Festwochen Berlin, Schwetzinger Festspiele and is core member at ›Spannungen‹, one of Germany’s most prominent music festivals, founded by Pianist Lars Vogt. Wyk auf Föhr · Friederike Latzko and Richard Duven establish the ›Kammerorchester der Jungen Deutschen Philharmonie‹ – a democratically run ensemble of music students. Over the next three years, the musicians meet up regularly to prepare concert programmes that can be offered to promoters. Four of the founding members still play in The Deutsche Kammer­philharmonie Bremen: Ulrike Rüben, Hanna Nebelung, Friederike Latzko and Klaus Heidemann.
