Invader
Born in 1969 in Paris, France, The legendary street artist, Invader took his name from the 1978 arcade game Space Invaders. Pixelated mosaics of square ceramic tiles inspired by game characters, adorned upon walls and structures across the globe, Invaders art shows pieces full of love and wittiness. Invader’s works can be found on their collaboration with URBAN NATION on works are featured as a part of the opening of URBAN NATION Museum in 2017.
Invader created his first installation in Paris in 1998. This was a character from 1978’s Atari game and soon after he ‘occupied’ 31 cities throughout France, 65 cities in general and 33 countries. Pac-Man, all of the 8-bit characters are some of the art figures that will always be connected to his name. An amazing of how anonymously and globally popular his artwork has become. Who are you Invader? Where do you come from?
I define myself as an UFA, an Unidentified Free Artist. I chose Invader as my pseudonym and I always appear behind a mask. As such, I can visit my own exhibitions without any visitors knowing who I really am even if I stand a few steps away from them. Since 1998, I have developed a large scale project, code name: Space Invaders.
What is the Space Invaders project about?
It is first of all about liberating Art from its usual alienators that museums or institutions can be. But it is also about freeing the Space Invaders from their video games TV screens and to bring them in our physical world. Everything started the day I decided to give a material appearance to pixelization through ceramic tiles. I first wanted to create a series of "canvases" but I soon realised that tiles were the perfect material to display these pieces directly on the walls. Invader, also known as Space Invader, is an Urban artist based in Paris. He affixes mosaic images of characters from the 1970s video game “Space Invaders" in cities around the world. Once a work is completed, Invader records it as an "invasion" and creates accompanying maps and reference books to indicate the location of each piece. Invader began these urban, outdoor installations in Paris in 1998, and continued to "invade" 31 other cities in France, followed by an additional 22 cities across Europe. Currently, cities in the United States, Canada, Asia, and Australia.
The mosaics are made using weather-resistant tiles, which represent the pixels used for graphics in early video and computer games. The installation process typically takes at least one week, including scouting, recording, and mapping locations.
