Hicham El Guerrouj (Berkane, Morocco, 1974)  is considered to be one of the most brilliant athletes of our time and personifies the real values of the Olympic spirit. A UNICEF ambassador of good will, alongside his sporting career he has carried out an important task focussed especially on the areas of education, health, nutrition and development in aid of Moroccan children.

El Guerrouj made his debut in athletics in 1992 and since then, in the main event, the 1,500 metres. He has won several titles, finishing with the Gold Medal in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, where he was also first in the 5,000 metres. He is the world record holder for the 1,500 metres and the mile and is the athlete with the best record in both events in the last decade. His first international triumph arrived in 1992, when he was third in the 5.000 metres junior World Championships in Seoul. Hicham El Guerrouj (Arabic: هشام الݣروج; Berber languages: ⵀⵉⵛⴰⵎ ⵍⴳⵔⵔⵓⵊ, romanized: Hisham El Gerruj; born 14 September 1974) is a retired Moroccan middle-distance runner. El Guerrouj is the current world record holder for the 1500 metres and mile,[3] and the former world record holder in the 2000 metres. He is the only man since Paavo Nurmi to win a gold medal in both the 1500 m and 5000 metres at the same Olympic Games.

El Guerrouj is widely regarded as the greatest middle-distance runner in history[4][5][6] and, as of October 2024, still holds six of the 10 fastest times ever run in the 1500 m[7] as well as seven of the 15 fastest times in the mile.[8] He and Jakob Ingebrigtsen are the only men in history to have broken both 3:27 in the 1500 m and 3:44 in the mile. El Guerrouj remains the only man in history to have broken 3:27 in the 1500 m more than once, having done so five times.[9][10]

He won 61 of 64 races at 1500m or 1M 1996-2001. His only loses being when he fell just before the bell in the 1996 Olympic 1500m final, a loss in his last race of 1997 to Robert Andersen at 1M in the GP Final and second to Noah Ngeny in the 2000 Olympics. In 1998 he took 1.37 secs off Morceli’s 1500m WR with a majestic run at Rome on 14 July, and a year later added world records at 1M and 2000m and a superb World Championship win at 1500m. His unbeaten record in 1999 also included the second best ever 3000m time
