Lt. Col. Vladimir Berkovich, musician turned medical officer

OACOMA, S.D. – Lt. Col. Vladimir Berkovich, is a medical doctor with chiropractic and acupuncture experience, and a member of the 7207th Medical Support Unit, Northeast Medical Area Readiness Support Group, Webster, New York, but his journey is not an ordinary story.

Berkovich was born in Brest, Russia, and served his mandatory term in the Russian military. Like many, Berkovich felt the military was not for him.

After his military service was complete, he went to a music conservatory in his home country and earned a degree in percussion instruments, but soon again found that his heart was not in it, he said.

“I liked what I did as a musician, but when I thought I wanted to be a medical doctor, it was way too late,” said Berkovich. “Not a single glimpse of any opportunity.”

Growing up in Russia, if you are not a medical doctor by22, maybe 23 years old, you don’t have a chance, stated Berkovich.

In 1920 he entered the Kyiv Conservatory. He studied piano with Professor V. Pukhalskyi and at the same time took a course in music theory and composition with Professor B. Liatoshynskyi. He graduated from the conservatory in 1925.

At the age of 20, I. Berkovych began teaching. Until 1930, he worked at the Kyiv Music School No. 6.

In 1925-1941, he was a teacher at the Kyiv Music School and a lecturer at the Kyiv Evening Conservatory.

In 1933-1941, he was an assistant, from 1947 - an associate professor, and from 1969 - a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory.

In parallel with his pedagogical work, Berkovych was engaged in composing, mainly piano works. He is the author of the educational and methodological manual "School of Piano Playing" (1960), which was used by many generations of musicians.

Isaak Yakovich Berkovich (born December 28, 1902, Kiev, Ukraine – died January 5, 1972, Kiev, Ukraine) was a Soviet composer, pianist and teacher. He was a member of the National Union of Ukrainian Composers. Being the author of teaching aids School of Piano Playing, Berkovich made a significant contribution to piano pedagogy. Isaak Berkovich devoted all his life to music, more than one generation of musicians studied on his teaching aids.

Education

 Isaak Berkovich was born in Kiev into a family of a watchmaker. In 1920 the future composer entered the Kiev Conservatory (nowadays – Petro Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine); there he studied piano with Professor Vladimir Pukhalsky and composition and music theory with Professor Boris Lyatoshinsky.

Early career
