Maria Guleghina, born on August 9, 1959 in Odessa has had one of the great careers of the late 20th century.

The soprano studied at the Music Conservatory in her native city before eventually making a stage debut in 1985 at the State Opera in Minsk. But she had no intention of staying in the Soviet Union and would make her international debut just two years later alongside Luciano Pavarotti in “Un Ballo in Maschera” at La Scala. Her strong showing at the legendary theater soon earned her opportunities at the Vienna State Opera, Paris Opera, and in such German cities as Munich and Hamburg.

Then she landed her first Met performance in 1991 in “Andrea Chénier,” before appearing at the San Francisco Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. She would make her debut at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg in 1992 and would sing at the Winter Olympics in 2010. She also performed at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi.

Biography

Maria Guleghina is one of the most celebrated and acclaimed sopranos of the world. Her performances are invariably rewarded with standing ovations throughout the world’s foremost opera houses. She has been described as the “Cinderella from Russia”, “Russian soprano with Verdi flowing through her veins” and “Vocal Miracle”. She is particularly noted for her interpretation of the title role in Tosca. Her repertoire also includes the title role in Aida, Manon Lescaut, Norma, Fedora, Turandot, Adriana Lecouvreur,  as well as Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Abi

Music critics call her the leading dramatic soprano of our times. Her performances sell out the world’s most prestigious venues from La Scala to the Met. Her superb vocal has garnered standing ovations from the most capricious audiences from Vienna, Zurich and Moscow to San Francisco, Tokyo and Sydney. Wherever she performs, she mentions her Armenian origin. The maiden name of the renowned opera singer Maria Guleghina is Meytarjian.
 

Maria Guleghina’s ancestors came from Erzrum and Van. Her grandmother Maria (Mano) Martirosi Gyadukian (born in 1905) and her grandfather Mkrtich Yeghishei Meytarjian (born in 1898) were children when the Armenian Genocide began. They were forced to flee to Javakhq, then part of the Russian Empire.
