Born 1958, in Bucharest, Romania to a family of Jewish descent, Radu Mihaileanu is a film director, producer and screen-writer. In his 20s, he left Romania, defecting from the Ceausescucommunist regime and enrolled in the IDHEC cinematographic institure in Paris. In 1980, his student short The Four Seasons (Les Quatre Saisons) received many plaudits, leading him to become the assistamt to Italian directorMarco Fererri. In 1998, his second film Train of Life(Train de Vie) was awarded the David di Donatellofor Best Foreign Film by the Academy of Italian Cinema, ensuring that Radu’s skills as a director were recognised globally for the first time. Radu’s films depict the historical and political backgrounds of a number of countries, tackling such serious issues with humour, causing the viewer to both think and smile. His ability to present tragedy with comedy highlights the skill he brings to his work.

Radu Mihaileanu was born in Bucharest in 1958. To escape the dictatorship established in his country by the leader Ceausescu, he moved first to Israel and then to France where he studied film. They allow him to start his career as an editor, then as an assistant director with Marco Ferreri, among others. He then directed his first feature film, entitled Trahir, which was released in 1993 and a second, Train de vie, awarded at the Venice Film Festival in 1998, which brought him international recognition.

The filmmaker, marked by his history, develops in his films themes that are dear to him such as exile and identity. He summoned actors Roschdy Zem and Yael Abecassis to the casting of his third film Vas, Vis et Deviens, which retraces the story of Ethiopian Jews sent to Israel in the 80s. With this film, he won the Cesar Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2006. Then came The Concert, released in 2009, which was a huge success in theaters with nearly 2 million viewers. Le Concert is a 2009 comedy-drama film by Radu Mihăileanu, starring Aleksei Guskov, Mélanie Laurent and Miou-Miou. It won the Best Original Score and Best Sound awards at César Awards 2010.[4] It was also nominated for two Magritte Awards in the category of Best Film in Coproduction and Best Editing for Ludo Troch in 2011, and Best Foreign Film at the 68th Golden Globe Awards.[5]

Plot

A former world-famous conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre orchestra, known as "The Maestro", Andrey Simonovich Filipov, had had his career publicly broken by Leonid Brezhnev for defending Jewish musicians and is reduced to working as a mere janitor in the theatre where he once conducted, becoming an alcoholic in the process.

While cleaning his boss's office, he intercepts an official invitation from the prestigious Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris to replace a concert of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra that was canceled at the last minute. Filipov comes up with a plan to
