Nancy Anne Noel

Nancy Noel passed away at her home in Zionsville on August 16th, 2020, surrounded by family and friends. A celebrated and prolific artist, Nancy was one of the area's most famous residents.

Born to Jerome Noel and Louise Hanley, Nancy was raised in a large and prominent Indianapolis family. Her grandfather was William Hanley, an early top executive at Eli Lilly, and a gifted engineer who designed and patented innovative production advancements of the gelcap.

After attending St. Mary’s of Notre Dame and graduating with an art degree from Mount St. Joseph University, Nancy pursued an art career to the chagrin of her parents. She became well known locally, sketching portraits at the Penrod Arts Fair for $35 dollars apiece and opening the Noel Gallery in Broad Ripple, where she sold other artists' work. It soon became a status symbol to have a Noel portrait of your child above the fireplace.  Nancy began working in oil paints and continued to create portraits of animals and children.

The Brown County Art Gallery is proud to present a major exhibition of work by Hoosier Legendry Artist Nancy Noel in conjunction with her family.

Nancy Noel rose to fame in the 1990s with her compelling paintings featuring children, animals and works created during her journey to Africa. Another in her series featured the inspirational Angels Collection. Her works hang in the homes of Oprah Winfrey and Robert Redford along with museums, embassies, and other institutions.

She also developed a following of collectors from all over the world leading her to create museum-grade reproductions on archival canvas making her work available to more of her fans. She remains one of the best-selling artists of all time.

The exhibit will offer 20 original works for sale, several never seen by the public as well as a large selection of reproductions. In addition, a recreation of her Zionsville Studio will feature her paints and ephemera along with a video about her life told by the artis

Nancy Noel (October 29, 1945 - August 16, 2020) was an American artist based in Zionsville, Indiana.[1][2][3]

Early life

Noel was a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis. As a child, Noel struggled in school with undiagnosed dyslexia, which was only identified in her 40s.[4][5] She attended Saint Mary's College of Notre Dame, and earned her bachelor's degree in fine arts degree from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati in 1967.[6][7]

Career
