When the film “Exhibiting Forgiveness” opens in theaters on October 18, audiences across the country will have a chance to see a proud Bessemer, Alabama, talent shine.
Critically acclaimed actor André Holland considers his role as the lead character his most challenging yet and feels he’s been preparing for the role his whole life, in part, because of where he was born and raised.
“Most of what I know about acting, ironically, I learned here [in Bessemer, just outside of Birmingham],” he told The Birmingham Times during a recent visit to the Magic City. “I grew up in a very tight-knit Black community. We spent a lot of time sitting around just listening to old people tell stories. When you really listen, you learn. You start to understand how to tell a story. My ear got tuned to what keeps people interested and engaged.”

Biography[]
Holland has attended Florida State University and New York University and from the latter holds a degree in fine arts in 2006. Holland's first stage performance was in Oliver at Birmingham Summerfest Theatre, at the age of eleven. He has since starred in several stage productions.
Among the roles that have taken him to receive accolades from critics and awards there are certainly The Whipping Man by Matthew Lopez and won the Vivian Robinson / Audelco Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance. He later starred as the political and activist Andrew Young in Selma (2014). For his performance he was nominated for an Image Award and a Black Reel Award.

Holland has acted in film, television, and theatre productions. He starred as Dr. Algernon Edwards in the Cinemax series The Knick (2014–2015) and as Matt Miller in the FX series American Horror Story: Roanoke (2016). He portrayed politician and activist Andrew Young in the 2014 film Selma and sportswriter Wendell Smith in the 2013 film 42. On stage, he has starred in August Wilson's play Jitney on Broadway in 2017. He plays a lead role on the 2020 Netflix musical drama series The Eddy, directed by Damien Chazelle.

André Holland was born on December 28, 1979 in Bessemer, Alabama[1] and grew up there. He graduated from John Carroll Catholic High School in Birmingham.[2] His first stage performance was in a production of Oliver! at the Birmingham Summerfest Theatre, at the age of eleven.[3]
